Arrests precursor to UMNO's fall: Nik Aziz

(Harakah Daily) - The spate of arrests and police harassment throughout the country against supporters of the Bersih rally is a precursor to the UMNO and Barisan Nasional's downfall, said PAS Murshidul Am Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

“These arrests act as a precursor to the eventual fall of UMNO and Barisan Nasional," said the Kelantan Menteri Besar on a Twitter posting from Uzbekistan where he is on an official trip.

"I think the government has yet to learn from the fallen government in the Middle East."

Nik Aziz said the crackdown by the government could not scare the people away from supporting Bersih, whose rally on July 9 has been under attack from right-wing UMNO politicians threatening to incite violence to prevent a repeat of the Bersih rally in 2007 which attracted some 50,000 people in Kuala Lumpur.

Todate,, police have arrested more than 80 people, mostly for wearing the yellow t-shirt. At noon today, the office of Bersih 2.0 in Petaling Jaya secretariat was raided without any warrant.

Meanwhile, PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hasan Tantawi (right) has again urged UMNO to stop its excessive provocation by threatening to create chaos and instability ahead of the rally.

Nasrudin also cited a report by Perkasa mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia, quoting a Malay martial arts master threatening hinting that his disciples would resort to violence if Bersih rally went ahead as planned.

He echoed a statement by the staunchly pro-UMNO member of parliament, Ibrahim Ali, who also heads Perkasa, that he would not be able to control his supporters if they wished to bring weapons.

“With so many people how will you know who started it?" he asked.

Nasrudin reiterated that Bersih had no such agenda for violence and was to ensure peace in the country.
