RM49mil: the price of maintaining PM and DPM's homes

KUALA LUMPUR - Hot on the heels of the revelation today that some RM25 million was spent for trips by the prime minister, his deputy and their spouses, the government also revealed today that close to RM49 million was spent annually for the upkeep of their houses.

The bill, which comes to RM48,789,115.03, covers rental costs, renovations, electricity and water, according to a written reply from minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Aziz to PAS's Rantau Panjang member of parliament Siti Zailah Yusof.

Zailah had wanted to know the annual maintenance cost for the official residences now occupied by Najib Razak and Muhyiddin Yasin, between 2006 and 2010.

Giving a breakdown of the yearly costs, Nazri revealed that the rental for both buildings came to RM32,972,115.55, renovations RM3,581,744.78, electricity RM10,267,868.15 and water RM1,967,386.55.

Asked for her comments, Zailah said the people could now judge the lifestyles of the country's leaders when at the same time the masses were told to tighten their belts.

"The people are told to take austerity measures, while the country's leaders spent RM50 million a year on maintaining their houses," she added.

Earlier, the parliament was told that RM25 million was spent to cover overseas trips by Najib, Muhyiddin and their spouses.

In a written reply to Batu MP Tian Chua, a list of expenditure for trips by Najib and Rosmah showed some RM5.4 million being spent in the first six months of this year alone, more than the cost of trips in 2009 and 2008.
