UiTM student hauled up for pro-Aziz Bari posting

The Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) administration has compelled one of its students to erase a blog posting on the web which lambasted Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) for arbitrarily suspending a law lecturer.

This is because university authorities reportedly claimed that his blog posting used “unfavourable” words in lambasting the UIA administration over the suspension of law professor Abdul Aziz Bari.

Abdul Aziz was suspended by UIA last week and investigated over his comments on the statement by the Selangor sultan over an Islamic authority’s ‘inspection’ of a function held on the premises of a Petaling Jaya church.

The legal expert’s suspension has since been lifted but he now faces a possible charge under the Sedition Act.

Abdul Aziz’s suspension has raised a furore as the public, students and oppositions leaders hit out at the arbitrary action, culminating in two student demonstrations in UIA last week protesting the matter.

A source told Malaysiakini that the student Khalid Mohd Ismath was called up by a deputy dean of the Student Affairs Department just after noon yesterday.

“He was ‘advised’ to stop writing about the Abdul Aziz issue and to stop lambasting the UIA administration,” related the source further.

A first year law student, Khalid is also the deputy president of the Independent Students Activist Group, more well-known by its Malay acronym of Kami.

According to the source further, Khalid’s blog post touched on the suspension of Abdul Aziz and criticised the action as unnecessary, calling on students everywhere to demonstrate against it.

As a result of the meeting with the department, Khalid has acquiesced to their order ro erase his posting.
