'Kelantan salon harassment stagnating creativity'

MCA has taken the Kota Baru Municipal Council (MPKB) to task, saying it will stifle creativity of hairstylists if it persists in enforcement measures to prevent hair salons from featuring posters of models without covered heads (tutup aurat).

“How else can hairstylists advertise their skills and services offered if they are denied the opportunity to feature models with different hair styles?

“Not only is the MPKB imposing their version of PAS religious enactments on non-Muslims, MPKB is stagnating creativity and innovation among hairstylists,” MCA deputy publicity chief Loh Seng Kok said in a statement today.

kelantan salon sexy poster report 270913He was referring to the reported actions of several council enforcement officers, who, according toThe Star daily, warned a hair salon operator to remove posters of models showcasing various hairstyles as being “too sexy”.
MCA’s Loh said he was worried about foreign tourists visiting the east coast state and added that those who were Malay-illiterate may simply not be able to find a ‘Kelantanese hairdresser’ when they need one.

Meawhile, MCA’s secretary-general Kong Cho Ha similarly heaped criticism, not only on MPKB and PAS, but also towards DAP.

“Why are other Pakatan partners like DAP impartial on this and have not uttered any sound of protest despite the unjust policy by PAS against non-Muslim hair salon owners?” Kong said in a statement.

Again, Kong stressed that hairdressers who could not publicise their business properly would be rendered ineffective and lose business.

PAS has ruled Kelantan, a conservative Muslim-majority Malay heartland, since 1990 and has consistently defeated BN in successive elections.

In his statement, written in a mocking tone, Kong called the argument given by the MPKB enforcement officers “downright ridiculous and laughable”, and said the PAS-led government used “ultra-conservative measures which are inconsistent with political ethics”.
