Police have reportedly warned online news portals not to publish articles that appear to be defending the late communist leader Chin Peng, or be prepared to face action under Malaysia's security laws.
The Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar (below) had reportedly said that the force would not hesitate to take action because the articles are deemed a threat to parliamentary democracy.
"I am concerned about this and urge members of the public not to be fooled by the online news portal's advice because they are people who are not very smart in giving advice," he was quoted in Utusan Malaysia today.
The report did not name the news portal involved, but states that he was responding to news reports that had questioned the barriers to bringing Chin Peng's ashes to Malaysia.
On that point, Khalid said the government has the power to restrictthe importation of human remains under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease (Importation and Exportation of Human Remains, Human Tissues and Pathogenic Organisms or Substances ) Regulations 2005.
