Injured cop claims 'unruly' protesters threw spray tin

A 44-year-old cop who was injured on New Year's Eve has alleged he was hit on the head by a foam spray tin thrown by anti-price hike protesters marching from Bukit Bintang, where he was stationed, to Dataran Merdeka.

Corporal Faizul Ali claimed the incident happened at about 11pm after protesters, comprising mostly youths, had acted unruly, resulting in his injury.

“There is no use that they study in tertiary institutions if they do not respect the authorities,” the injured policeman was reported to have said inBerita Harian.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohmad Salleh said the case is being investigated, claming a second police officer, a Special Branch corporal, was also injured.

The officer had alleged that protesters stepped on his chest when they barged through police at Jalan Raja, near Dataran Merdeka.

Meanwhile, it was reported that police have apologised for uploading an image of an injured man they assumed was a police officer on duty during the rally on the force’s Facebook page.

The image was later denounced by netizens who pointed out that the claim was inconsistent with the police’s own statement that the officers injured on duty yesterday were only injured on their arm.

Meanwhile, Sinar Harian Online reported that teen singer Najwa Latif has denied sending a tweet on New Year's eve alleging the protesters were violent and had molested several women.

Najwa, or her real name Imratul Najwa Abdul Latif, was commenting on a tweet that became viral which she believeed was sent out by irresponsible people who are out to tarnish her reputation.

“It is untrue, I did not tweet like that. It is false. The tweet did not came from me and I think it is false or may have been edited by using computer graphic (to represent her),” she said when contacted by the daily.

She had performed at Dataran Merdeka at 11.15pm on New Year’s Eve and described the atmosphere as peaceful.

“Nothing happened and I left at 11.40pm,” the singer said.
