Bekir: RM900k for child support is too much

Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, who was ordered by the Kuala Lumpur Syariah Court last year to pay more than RM900,000 in child maintenance, has argued that the amount is “too much”.

Testifying in a contempt proceeding against him brought by his former wife Shahnaz A Majid, he denied that he neglected their 21-year-old son.

"I gave him pocket money and bought him new clothes, and a Mitsubishi car in London,” said Bekir, who had arrived in court wearing a face mask.

"I cannot comply with the ex-parte order to pay RM900,000 as the amount is too much and I do not have that amount in the bank. I have another wife and four children.”

Previously at another hearing for his former wife's claim of mutaah (gift), a chartered accountant hired by Shahnaz, testified that Bekir is worth between RM900 million to RM1.395 billion.

Bekir, the son of Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, also told the court that he did not pay Shahnaz for fear that the money would not reach their son.

He was responding to the syariah judge, who quizzed the businessman as to why he has not complied with the court order issued in February last year.

Judge Azzeman Omar also asked Bekir to show cause as to why he should not be jailed and fined for contempt.

Bekir sounded shaky as he replied that he does not want to go to prison.

He said he had applied to set aside the order on March 26 last year, and claimed that the ex-parte order was only valid for 30 days as there had been no application for an extension.

Claiming that it was not his intention to disobey the court order, he said he felt the ex-parte order was against existing law and prejudicial to him.

The Syariah High Court had last February approved the ex-parte order for Bekir to pay RM902,746.69 for child maintenance for his son's education in the United Kingdom.

The order was part of Shahnaz’s RM121 million suit for child maintenance.

She has also filed a RM100 millionmutaah (gift) claim and RM300 million joint matrimonial asset claim.

Replying his lawyer Saadiah Din, Bekir said he had entered RM200,000 into his lawyers’ account to meet his son's expenses as long as a receipt was produced.

"I continue to give my son money and purchased the car," he said.

Cross-examined by Akbardin Abdul Kader, appearing for Shahnaz, Bekir was unable to reply when it was shown to him that the ex-parte order did not stipulate a 30-day period.

Judge Azzeman fixed Feb 27 for parties to file written submissions and March 6 to deliver his decision.

If convicted of contempt, Bekir faces up to six months’ jail or a fine of RM2,000.
