Celebrating Valentine's Day may just be the start to unhealthy social habits such as fraud, mental disorders from alcohol, abortions and babies being abandoned.
This is the warning from today’s Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) Friday sermon text which expressed regret that this "Western" culture has invaded Malaysia, undermining the Islam faith.
"While we, the Muslim community, is here in mosques listening to sermons and praising the mighty Allah... out there, it is possible that a group of young Muslims are involved in a social meet for Valentine's Day, that's celebrated by lovers," said the Jakim text, which is to be read out in mosques later today.
Adding that there is no such celebration of lovers under Islamic laws, such "mind-controlling" culture would then just lead many to the lost path of unrestrained freedom and cause Muslims to backslide from the faith.
“Imagine what will happen to the future of Islamic community, particularly the younger generation, if this deviant cultural practice is left unabated?
"Surely, we are heading for a big disaster as confusion and moral degradation will reign in our society as the young generation is the mirror of the future of a country and nation," it said.
Today is a double Valentine's Day for many Malaysians as it coincides with the 15th day of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
Called 'Chap Goh Mei' in Hokkien, Feb 14 is also celebrated by many Chinese worldwide as the "Chinese Valentine’s Day".
The falling of the two events, of eastern and western origins celebrating love on the same day, happens only once every 19 years.
