Port Klang hits unhealthy haze level

The area has registered an unhealthy Air Pollutant Index reading of 103.
jhhaze1906PETALING JAYA: The haze seems set to make an appearance once again if the Air Pollutant Index (API) is of any indication.
According to the Department of Environment (DOE) website, Port Klang has registered an unhealthy API reading of 103 as of 3pm today.
This is not the first time the area has hit the unhealthy level in recent times. As evidenced through the API readings, Port Klang registered a reading of 123 at 1am on Wednesday.
Port Klang is the only area which has recorded unhealthy readings. Currently, 19 areas are at the moderate level.
However, API readings of several areas in Negeri Sembilan, Perak and the Klang Valley have also steadily increased in the past few days.
The API classifies readings from 0 to 50 as good, 51 to 100 as moderate, 101 to 200 as unhealthy, 201 to 300 as very unhealthy and readings of 301 and above as hazardous.
The Riau province in Indonesia yesterday declared a state of emergency after being blanketed in thick haze from forest fires.
Blazes are deliberately lit every year to clear land for palm oil and wood pulp plantations.
Haze from fires on Sumatra is an annual problem in Southeast Asia, but last June, several areas in the country had recorded hazardous API readings, namely Port Klang and Seri Manjung.
