Conservative Muslim group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) has questioned whether the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) is backing deviant activities when it condemned the banning of Comango by the Home Ministry.
“Suhakam’s statement - which said that the ban against Comango is against freedom of speech and civil rights - indicate as if Suhakam allows for any activities, including deviant activities, to be conducted without limits," said Isma deputy president Aminuddin Yahaya in a statement today.
He added that Suhakam should not be seen as being "immature" or "not bringing any good" to the country.
"It has to be made clear that they (Comango) had brought their demands to the international stage.
"What’s more, their demands were clearly against the principles of Islam and the federal constitution," he said.
Comango, a coalition of over 50 NGOs had provided its critical review of Malaysia's human rights record during the United Nation's Universal Periodic Review.
It has also raised sensitive human rights issues, including the persecution of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community as well as freedom of religion among Muslims.
Since then, Comango has faced backlash from conservative Muslim groups at home and was outlawed by the Home Ministry on Jan 8.
