KUALA LUMPUR - In a move that critics said underscored ruling party Umno's lack of class and the backward direction it was pushing the Malays with its racial and religious-enmity brand of polemics, members of a Malay NGO conducted a rowdy protest against Seputeh MP Teresa Kok that may well have crossed the line and again make an international laughing stock of the beleaguered Najib administration.
Member of the NGO had slaughtered chickens, smeared blood from the carcases onto banners that depicted Teresa and other Opposition leaders of Chinese descent, while at the same time offering a bounty of RM1,200 to anyone who could slap the Seputeh MP.
"It is very illegal and we are waiting for the police to take action," PKR vice president and MP for Padang Serai N Surendran told Malaysia Chronicle.
Oddly, the Malay NGO too wants swift action by the authorities - but against Teresa, who they lambasted for insulting “Malay leadership, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Islam and Malay dignity".
Malays are the predominant race, forming 55% of Malaysia's 28-million population and enjoy special rights and privileges over the Chinese and Indian minorities. Prime Minister Najib Razak himself recently caught the attention of even the BBC with his rather farcical comments on rising food costs when he used an absurd example, the ubiquitous water spinach or 'kangkung', as a benchmark for comparison.
Under fire for lampooning PM and wife in a satirical video
Teresa had come under fire after she released a Chinese New Year greeting video, entitled "One-der-ful" Malaysia CNY 2014, which lampooned the excessively extravagant lifestyle of the prime minister and his 'shopping mad' wife Rosmah Mansor, referred to as 'Lo-Si-Ma' in the clip.
The Malay NGO, which called itself the Council of Islamic NGOs, had initially offered a reward of RM500 to anyone who dared to slap Teresa and provided photographic evidence of their act. That sum was revised after the 50-odd protesters did a collection among themselves and came up with RM1,200.
"This offer is open to anyone who can slap Teresa Kok. But they must provide a picture to claim the RM1,200," The Malaysian Insider reported group leader Zulkfli Sharif as saying.
Total madness
Zulkfli also said the reward was open to all Malaysians..
His group had smeared the blood of the slaughtered chickens on a banner featuring photographs of Teresa, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Machang Bubuk assemblyman Lee Khai Loon.
They stomped on the "faces" of the leaders on the banner, which also contained references to the May 13, 1969 racial riots.
Meanwhile, Teresa has said she will lodge another police report over the latest incident. The still single lawmaker had a day ago submitted a police complaint after receiving numerous threats over the One-der-ful video.
“What the protesters did is total madness and the police must immediately take action against the person. Lawlessness and such open acts of encouraging violence must not be tolerated.” she said.
This is how to uphold the 'supremacy' of the Malays?
Indeed, all eyes are on whether the Najib administration will uphold law and order in the country or allow the incident to be swept under the rug as many believe they will on the grounds that the 'supremacy' of the Malays must be upheld.
"So even if Najib may not have directly instigated this demo to teach Teresa a lesson, by keeping quiet and asking the police and Home Ministry not to take action against the NGO, it is the same as Najib himself who ordered the chickens to be slaughtered, the blood to be smeared and the reward to slap Teresa offered. This is most disgraceful behavior especially to the Malays because it tarnishes their image of being a peaceful, civilized and intelligent community. They must kick out Umno before they become totally outcast by the world." - Malaysia Chronicle
