Nazri criticises Waytha, backs MCA EGM

Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz today criticised former deputy minister P Waythamoorthy - who had quit his government post on Feb 10 - for failing in his job.

Commenting on Waythamoorthy's call to Prime Minister Najib Razak to resign, Mohamed Nazri said: "He wants to resign, that is his problem, why ask the PM to resign.”

He said that even without the former deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, the Indian community would continue to be cared for by BN.

"Even if we had the budget, it would not be channeled through him. How can a budget of RM700 million be put under one account for him to spend, he is too naive,” he told reporters after opening the Kampung Chuar Bridge in Padang Rengas today.

"We have spent for the Indian community through many sources, for example the Tekun project which comes under the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry.”

Waythamoorthy (right) had cited non-availability of the budget as his reason for quitting.

Meanwhile, Nazri fully supports the decision of MCA in nominating its vice-president Chew Mei Fun to be the BN candidate for the Kajang by-election.

He also complimented the courage of the party's top leadership, Liow Tiong Lai (president) and Wee Ka Siong (deputy president) in making the decision as it was incumbent upon a political party to be involved in elections.

"The question of winning or losing is secondary, the most important thing is the question of democracy as we must give the people a choice. If we do not contest, the people would be disappointed as they cannot vote for the party they support.”

MCA’s EGM should not be delayed

Mohamed Nazri said he hoped voters would give their full support to Chew as she is a credible and hardworking leader.

"I will also go to the ground to campaign with MCA. I have informed Liow that I will there during the by-election," he said.

On MCA's extraordinary general meeting (EGM) tomorrow, Mohamed Nazri supported the effort of the party's leadership to hold the meeting which would decide on MCA's participation in the cabinet.

"If the EGM is postponed, it will affect MCA which used to represent the Chinese community in the cabinet and therefore should not be delayed," he said.

He did not agree with the existing stand of MCA in not participating in the cabinet as the principle of this country was that no communities or races should be marginalised as leaders of the government.
