PKR: Only 17 percent oppose Kajang Move

PKR has claimed that only 17 percent of voters in Kajang are angry over the by-election in the state seat, brought about by the abrupt resignation of the party’s representative, Lee Chin Cheh.

Strategy director Rafizi Ramli told a press conference today that this was the finding of a survey conducted last week among 361 respondents, all of whom are voters in the constituency.

"And of the 17 percent - when we look at the profile of those who disagree (with the Kajang Move) - the majority of them are BN (supporters)," he claimed.

The ‘Kajang Move’ was engineered to pave the way for PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to enter and influence politics in Selangor, possibly as menteri besar although he will not confirm this.

Rafizi elaborated that aside from the 17 percent angry respondents, 26 percent supported the Kajang move, 21 percent were curious, 26 percent did not care and 10 percent answered "don't know".

As such, Rafizi said the survey indicated local bread and butter issues will affect the voters' decisions the most.

"The survey clearly shows the dominant issues in Kajang will be local matters and not political matters," he said.

Meanwhile, Anwar (right) who was also present at the press conference, said the party's survey about voters' concerns in Kajang confirmed the feedback he received when going to the ground.

He said the issue of safety and crime were on the top of voters' minds at 42 percent, followed by traffic congestion (38 percent), cleanliness and waste management (30 percent), social problems (20 percent), welfare (16 percent), business stalls (12 percent) and local government services (11 percent).

"I will continue to engage the people of Kajang to discuss about their hopes and solutions to their local issues," he said.

Anwar added he had also asked party-linked think tank Institut Rakyat to study the best practices in other areas, to help resolve the problems faced in Kajang.
