Stop insulting Indians, Umno ministers told

Umno ministers and their MIC ‘team players’ should stop insulting the intelligence of the Indian community with their "most absurd excuses" for not fulfilling promises made in the memorandum of understanding the BN signed with Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia (PHM).

So far three Umno ministers and many MIC ‘team players’ have gone into an attacking mode to defend Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak after PHM chairperson P Waythamoorthy called on Najib tostep down for "lying" to the Indian community.

This followed the non-fulfilment of the promises made to the Indian community in the MoU, PHM’s Penang chairperson K Kalayselvam said today.

The MoU was signed in April last year, just before the May 5 general election, after which Waythamoorthy called on Indians in the country to throw their support behind BN in the 13th general election.

Waythamoorthy, who was appointed a senator after GE13 and subsequently made a deputy minister, supposedly in charge of Indian affairs, had also called Najib a liar for betraying the Indian community.

'Najib a failed prime minister'

Kalayselvam described Najib as a “failed prime minister” and added that Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar’s claim that Waythamoorthy had been ineffective and money-minded was "most appalling" to the poor Indians.

"The poor Indians gave Waythamoorthy the mandate to represent them and voted the BN in only because of the PHM-BN MoU that was signed," Kalayselvam said.

"Khairy’s claim that Waythamoorthy wants to control all the money does not hold any water as it was decided in the MoU that an appointee of PHM will be entirely responsible for implementing the programmes stated there," he explained.

"Has Khairy ever read the MoU, or for that matter even seen it?" Kalayselvam asked.

Khairy had criticised Waythamoorthy for his quit move, asking him not to blame Najib for his own failure to effect changes.

Waythamoorthy turned around and asked Khairy if he would be able to function if the allocations for his ministry was taken away.

"Why question what was agreed upon before signing the MoU? It seems like broad daylight robbery of the votes of the poor Indians," he added.

Kalayselvam also said Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein’s claim that Waythamoorthy was "insincere and selfish" in championing the cause of the Indian community in a holistic manner also begged explanation.

He urged all Waythamoorthy's critics to stop prevaricating on this "biggest betrayal" to the poor Indian community and answer PHM's questions with facts and supporting evidence.

These include why the new unit not set up, as agreed upon in the MoU, even after eight months of Waythamoorthy being in office and after 16 meetings had been held with the prime minister himself.

"Why was the budget agreed upon to fund the many socio-economic interventions for the Indian poor society in the MoU not disbursed?" Kalayselvam queried.

He also asked why Najib and the BN signed the MoU in the first place if they have no political will or moral decency to fulfil their promises.

“Why did Najib and BN mislead the Indian community into voting for the BN via the MoU? How is this not a breach of trust of the highest order?" Kalayselvam asked.
