Syabas says Umno not controlling water relief

Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) yesterday denied allegations that the supply and distribution of water to areas affected by water disruption in Balakong was controlled by certain quarters.

Its deputy general manager of corporate communications and public affairs Priscilla Alfred said the accusation was baseless as Syabas worked together with the resident heads and local leaders in managing the movement of the tankers which distributed water to the affected residents.

"Syabas has set up local service centres in Taman Impian Ehsan since Feb 7 to provide information on emergency water distribution to the residents affected by the closure of the Cheras Batu 11 water treatment plant.

"In the case of Taman Impian Ehsan, it was a coincidence that the Syabas local service centre was right next door to the Rukun Tenaga cabin which had the Umno logo.

"Syabas decided to place the service centre there because it was along the main entrance into Taman Impian Ehsan, Taman Desa Karunmas and Taman Bukit Emas," she said in a statement, Kuala Lumpur, yesterday,

Reports in Mandarin-language newspapers yesterday quoted Balakong state assemblyman Eddie Ng Tien Chee as saying Syabas water tankers sent to the affected areas were allegedly exploited by Umno which distributed water only to BN supporters.

She stressed that the Syabas service centre received the full cooperation from the chairman of Taman Impian rukun tetangga, Ehsan Zainal Abidin Zainuddin who constantly accompanied all the water tankers to the affected areas.

However, she admitted that the capacity of equipment for water aid by water tankers and static tankers was limited and could not meet the needs of the consumers.

She said Syabas needed the cooperation of the Rukun Tetangga to avoid a similar incident like the Syabas lorry being stopped and held up by the local residents.

Ammonia contamination

The Batu 11 Cheras Water Treatment Plant had to be closed following ammonia contamination in the Sungai Langat.

Alfred said the water disruption is expected to continue as the water treatment plant was still closed.

Meanwhile, in Kuala Selangor, Selangor Federal Action Council chairman Noh Omar said the delay by the Selangor government in building the Langat 2 water treatment plant had worsened the water crisis in the state.

He said the state government should be more realistic and serious in solving the issue as the water problem in the state had gone on for too long, without a solution.

He added that the state government's decision to stop the construction of the Pancang Bedena water catchment project in Sabak Bernam which should have been completed last year for agricultural purposes, also affected farmers at a time when several dams in the Klang Valley were facing a drop in water level.
