KUALA LUMPUR - Coming from Semporna, Sabah, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal (pic) has welcomed the Prime Minister’s decision to preserve the Sedition Act, noting that people from his hometown will feel safer due to the law’s retention.
Shafie, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had made a wise decision to retain and strengthen the Act.
“It is appropriate. When the Act was retained, I was happy. We are aware that there are bad elements inside and outside Sabah.
“They don’t want the state to be stable. There are voices outside who want Sabah to secede from Malaysia,” Shafie said, following the close of the Umno general assembly, Saturday.
“I come from Semporna. The ones who will really feel it are the Semporna people. We will get hit first if insurgents come.
“The sacrifice made by the forces and people during the Lahad Datu intrusion is sad and the retention of the Act will benefit Sabah,” he said.
Shafie urged those who wanted Sabah and Sarawak to secede from Malaysia to stop spewing such statements.
“The Act shouldn’t be just an Act. We need to increase its enforcement once the new provisions have been approved in parliament,” he said. -ANN
