The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Dr Nazrin Shah, has ordered the cancellation of all official New Year celebrations in the state following the worsening flood situation in the state, national news agency Bernama reported today.
Sultan Azlan Shah Foundation would donate uniforms and shoes to children affected by the floods.
Sultan Nazrin also urged Muslims to hold solat hajat (special prayers) on Friday.
The sultan and his consort, Raja Permaisuri Tuanku Zara Salim, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir visited flood victims in Lenggong, Gerik.
The decree comes as incessant rain and rising floodwaters raging through five states in the peninsula led to the evacuation of more than 90,000 people – a figure which might be the highest in the nation’s history.
Bernama also reported that 90,250 people were evacuated this morning with the highest number in Kelantan at 32,343, followed by Terengganu (28,991), Pahang (24,316), Perak (4,335) and Perlis (265).
The east coast states suffer annual floods but this has been the worst in living memory. The last big floods in the country was in 1971, with the worst hit being the Klang Valley.
Putrajaya has approved an immediate allocation of RM50 million for flood-hit states, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Husni Hanadzlah was quoted as saying by Bernama.
Meanwhile, Umno supreme council member and Kuala Selangor MP Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim has suggested that Putrajaya call off the planned New Year celebrations in light of the worsening flood situation.
“This would show that the government and its leaders are concerned about the hardship faced by the people in this disaster,” Irmohizam said in a statement.
