DAP’s 30% women quota just a political ploy, says MCA

MCA's Ti Lian Ker says DAP's 30% women in CEC just a ruse to get women voters.

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA’s Harmony and Religious Bureau Chairman, Ti Lian Ker today claimed that DAP’s recent amendment to its constitution to include 30% women in its Central Executive Committee was just a political ploy.

Speaking to FMT, Ti said that DAP had been harping on the racial divide for years without providing any real solutions, unlike BN.

“Now that DAP has capitalised on the issues of race, religion, culture and language, their next target is the gender divide as it has the potential to pull women’s votes to their side.

“These are all calculated political moves but the question is besides exploiting and capitalising on the racial, religious and now gender divide, what has DAP done towards narrowing the gap on the national front?” asked Tan.

According to Ti, “DAP in 1969 played the language and culture sentiments to the hilt ” to tap into votes, using Singapore as a comparison and succeeded in winning reactionary votes, something which Chinese still regret as “they brought down and destroyed Tunku Abdul Rahman’s legacy of tolerance and multiculturalism by allowing extreme nationalism to take over.”

Saying that gender issues were powerful issues to ride on, considering women today were more powerful in numbers and education, Tan also pointed out that the ratio of men to women among party members had to also be taken into consideration before any adjustment to leadership was made.

“To do any drastic changes depend on other factors too,” he said.

“DAP is a party that’s top heavy and can make structural changes easily as they are not known for their organisational skills but their skills at provoking others,” he declared.

Meanwhile, Gerakan Youth Chief Tan Keng Liang welcomed the move as DAP’s current top posts were male-dominated.
