There will be no road closures or increased police presence at Dataran Merdeka despite a planned protest by Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun) on New Year's Eve, police said.
City police chief Datuk Tajudin Md Isa said today that a “Malam cinta Rasul” was scheduled to be held at Dataran Merdeka on Wednesday.
"All Muslims are welcome to participate in the event. We are not planning to close any roads or increase police presence," he told The Malaysian Insider.
Asked about the planned Turun rally, Tajudin said police would not be making any special plans and they could go ahead with their protests.
Turun had said the aim of their rally was to demand the government reduce pump prices in view of declining global crude oil prices.
Turun chairperson Azan Safar said the aim of the rally was not to disrupt “Malam cinta Rasul” (Love the Prophets) event jointly organised by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
“(We will) continue with our plans at Dataran Merdeka. Dataran does not belong to City Hall, but to the people of Malaysia," he told Malaysiakini.
“We are not going to snatch the microphone from people chanting praises to the Prophet,” he said, stressing that he was targeting a 10,000 turnout for Turun’s rally, dubbed the RM1.90 rally.
The RM1.90 rally, which is supported by Pakatan Rakyat, is also a way to show love for Prophet Muhammad, said Azan.
“One way to show our love to the Prophet is to champion justice and to fight oppression,” he told Malaysiakini.
Turun is urging that RON95 pump price be reduced from RM2.26 per litre to RM1.90 through the reintroduction of a government subsidy.
PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli also planned to lead an anti-fuel price rally at Dataran Merdeka the same day.
Last year, Turun’s rally against rising cost of living at Dataran Merdeka prompted City Hall to halt its New Year’s Eve concert half an hour before midnight.
The December 31, 2013 rally was also branded as an attempt to topple the government.
