PETALING JAYA - MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel will likely not contest in the upcoming party elections. Instead he is likely to field a proxy to "defend" the post in a bid to continue to "lead" the party, according to a report in China Press today.
It is understood that Datuk G. Kumar Aaman, whom Palanivel recently appointed as secretary-general in place of Datuk S. G. Sothinathan, would go for the No. 2 post.
However, the report said Palanivel is still looking for the right candidate to be his proxy for the presidential race, for which deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam has already announced he would be contesting.
A source said the legal action taken by Palanivel's faction against the Registrar of Societies (ROS) is aimed at buying time to enable the party chief to identify his key men for important posts.
"Judging from the current situation, Palanivel will surely be defeated if he is to defend his post.
"Many grassroots leaders have made it clear that he is not suitable to continue leading the party, saying he had failed to bring any changes for the Indian community," said the source.
Datuk R. Ramanan, whom Palanivel sacked as treasurer-general on Jan 30, had said the Indian community now needs a leader who can fight for its interests. He said Palanivel is losing support because he had not done much for the community as party chief.
To questions posed by the daily, Palanivel, who is natural resources and environment minister, only said he would provide the answers after a meeting with his subordinates.
Apart from Subramaniam, who is contesting the top post, vice-president Datuk M. Saravanan has indicated that he would go for the deputy president post.
The vice-presidential race is expected to see a comeback bid by several losers in the last party elections, including former treasurer-general Datuk Jaspal Singh, former Youth chiefs Datuk S. A. Vigneswaran and T. Mohan, Perak state assembly speaker Datuk Devamany S. Krishnasamy and Bukit Bintang deputy chief James Selvaraja. - Sundaily
