PETALING JAYA: The billions that have been squirrelled away by 1Malaysia Development Berhad must be accounted for as it involves the rakyat, said PAS Vice-President Husam Musa today.
Referring to former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad who has been relentless in his criticism of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), and Najib Razak’s lacklustre handling of it, Husam said, “Just like Dr Mahathir, we have to ask where is the money?
“Is it for some countries? For some individuals? For political funding?”
He added, “1MDB involves all of us and our children, more than it involves Tun Dr Mahathir.”
He expressed alarm at the climbing debts of the Finance Ministry owned investment company although it was barely four years old, and added, “What if Najib is allowed to run the country for four years without anything being done about it?”
He also said 1MDB’s debt, coupled with Mahathir’s attacks on Najib to step down, had prompted him to propose a no-confidence motion against the prime minister when Parliament commences again in May.
He also said he hoped leaders from both sides of the political divide could agree on the matter.
“Although it seems like Dr Mahathir’s attack is aimed at strengthening Umno and BN, our (Pakatan Rakyat) goal is to save the country from getting into trouble, by eliminating the cause,” Husam was quoted by the Malaysian Insider as saying.
He also said Najib’s preference to keep mum on the issue only suggested that there was some truth behind the allegations.
Despite an attempt to come clean about issues plaguing the nation, Najib consented to an interview with TV3, but skilfully side-stepped many issues, leaving his critics none the wiser.
Things have since come to a head with Mahathir now accepting speaking engagements to talk to the public about 1MDB and to exert pressure on Najib to step down.
