Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will not be arrested, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, warning that action will be taken against those who spread such rumours, The Star reported today.
Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister, described the rumour as "totally nonsense" as there was no reason to arrest Muhyiddin, his predecessor.
"This rumour is totally nonsense. I had called the attorney-general and the inspector-general of police to verify the allegation, and they answered in the negative," he was quoted as saying by The Star.
“I then called Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) personally at 2am (yesterday) to assure him and his wife that the police were not coming after them."
The Star said that rumours of Muhyiddin's impending arrest began on Wednesday, a day after he was axed from the Cabinet.
The rumours grew stronger grew after a leaked video showed Muhyiddin recounting a conversation with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in which the latter purportedly admitted that US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) had been transferred into his accounts.
In the video, Muhyiddin appeared to be informing his guests at his home that he had confronted Najib on The Wall Street Journal's report that money, allegedly from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB)-linked firms, was deposited into Najib's personal accounts.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir could be seen seated beside Muhyiddin in the video, which was filmed on Tuesday night hours after the elder politician was ejected from the cabinet.
Zahid said that the video was taken in the privacy of Muhyiddin's house and it was a conversation among friends that should not have been leaked.
“This is an angry and upset man talking. When one is upset, one will say things.
“I know how it feels because I have gone through that too when I was forced to resign (as Umno Youth chief) and was later held under the Internal Security Act," he was quoted as saying by the English daily.
Zahid, however, did not elaborate when asked if there was any truth to what Muhyiddin had claimed in the video.
Zahid warned that authorities would not hesitate to take action against those who spread the "malicious" lies and rumours that could cause anger and unrest among Muhyiddin's supporters.
"I will not hesitate to take action against these rumour-mongers. These rumours are malicious," he added.
