His lawyer Honey Tan said he was arrested at the Petaling police station at Jalan Klang Lama under Section 124(b) of the Penal Code, which pertains to activities that are detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
Tan said according to police, Mandeep's arrest was in relation to statements made at a press conference, but it is not clear which of his statements were being investigated.
"We have no idea which press conference the police are referring to, but the only press conference Mandeep had joined was the one on Bersih 4," she told The Malaysian Insider at the police station tonight.
Mandeep was arrested when he came voluntarily to the police station this evening.
On July 29, Bersih 2.0 announced that they would hold an overnight street rally from August 29 to 30, dubbed Bersih 4, to call for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's resignation over his handling of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), as well as for institutional reforms.
Before he was arrested, Mandeep told The Malaysian Insider in the afternoon that he had been called to the police station without being told the reason.
Earlier today, youth activists Adam Adli Abd Halim and Syukri Rezab were arrested at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters over the #TangkapNajib street demonstration to be held in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
The three detainees were sent to the Jinjang police station tonight and their remand hearing is expected tomorrow at 10am.
