Bus Rapid Transit fares have been restructured, effective August 1.
The new structure is based on a basic cost of 90 sen, with additions of 81.5 sen for the first 6km; 42.1 sen for the next 12km to 18km; 28.2 sen for the next 18km to 24km; and a final 21.2 sen for the distance exceeding 24km.
This sets the maximum BRT fare for a ride at RM2.63.
According to a Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) statement, the new fare structure was approved by the cabinet on July 29.
”The new fare structure sets the maximum allowable fares for BRT services by operators.
"Therefore individual operators are not allowed to impose fares exceeding the fare structure," the statement said.
The statement also said that BRT operator Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana) was not able to cover the operational costs of the BRT Sunway line at the current ridership rate.
"Therefore to help commuters enjoy affordable BRT rates, the government has approved an annual operational subsidy not exceeding RM14 million for the first three years for Prasarana.”
Fares for the line are expected to be announced this afternoon by Prasarana, which also runs RapidKL. – Bernama
