Factory worker detained for alleged seditious Facebook post


Police detained a 26 year old factory worker for questioning today, regarding an alleged seditious posting against a religion on Facebook.
The suspect is currently being probed under Section 4 (1) of the 1948 Sedition Act, Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for inciting religious disharmony.
He was detained in Sungai Petani at at 12.15am and will be remanded up to Apr 29 to assist in the investigations, according to Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Farialatrash Wahid.
“Police were tipped off on Monday evening,” Mior told reporters, adding that a mobile phone and a SIM card was seized in the arrest of the suspect.
A statement issued by Penang Police Chief Abdul Ghafar Rajab disclosed that on Apr 25, at 10.39pm, a police officer on duty received a Whatsapp message from a source regarding a Facebook account of a male suspect which allegedly posted a seditious remark insulting a religion.
Abdul Ghafar said the source urged the police to probe the matter immediately.
"The criminal investigation department of the Northeast Police Headquarters successfully found the suspect and he was arrested.
“The police is investigating the matter thoroughly and urges certain quarters not to issue any comment which can jeopardise religious harmony among the various races, as this does not bring any benefit," he added. -Mkini
