Former MCA president also does not rule out taking part in a rally on the DoJ's civil suit related to 1MDB.
KAJANG: A former MCA president is sticking to his stand that misappropriating public funds and channelling it into a personal bank account is wrong.
“My mind has not changed and I still think it is wrong for people to channel (public) money into their personal accounts,” Dr Ling Liong Sik told a press conference at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) campus in Sungai Long here.
The former transport minister claimed in 2015 that Najib Razak had done this, which led to the Prime Minister suing him that same year.
Najib filed the suit over Ling’s allegation that he had “taken people’s money” in relation to the RM2.6 billion donation issue.
Ling then filed a counter defamation suit on Dec 14 the same year against Najib.
The High Court has yet to rule on Ling’s bid to strike out the lawsuit.
On a separate matter, Ling has not ruled out taking part in an opposition-led rally, which will be the culmination of a two-month roadshow across the country, to ensure the claims made in the United States Department of Justice’s (DoJ) civil lawsuits related to 1MDB are made known to the people.
“I’ll think about it”.
In its court filing in California on June 5, the DoJ sought to seize US$540 million (RM2.3 billion) in assets, including art works, jewellery, a luxury yacht and film rights purchased with funds allegedly embezzled from 1MDB.
The assets named in the applications included the film rights to the two comedies “Dumb and Dumber To” starring Jim Carrey and “Daddy’s Home” featuring Will Ferrell.
The action follows last July’s civil forfeiture suit by the DoJ which sought to recover all the assets, including but not limited to the Park Lane Hotel in New York, a luxury hotel in Beverly Hills, condominiums in New York, a private jet and expensive works of art, as well as finances related to Martin Scorsese’s movie “The Wolf of Wall Street” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. -FMT
