Poll: For Umno members, 'honesty' not a major currency

Only one percent of 691 Umno members or supporters surveyed by pollster Merdeka Center said "honesty" and "trustworthiness" were an important criterion for Umno’s future leadership.

The respondents said the most important criteria was to have the trust of Malaysians, having the vision to strengthen Umno and to help the party close ranks.

Only 27 percent of respondents said the “regaining the trust of Malays” was a criterion.

The survey was conducted between June 25 and 28. A total of 69 percent of the respondents were ordinary members, eight percent were supporters but not party members while the rest were office-bearers at various levels. Only 25 percent of respondents were female.

Overall, 83 percent of those surveyed agreed that Umno was facing problems while 58 percent said the party was currently either in a “shaky” or “critical” position.

The respondents said the top three reasons for BN’s poor performance during the 14th general election were: Najib Abdul Razak (40 percent of the respondents), the Goods and Services Tax (GST) (22 percent) and the 1MDB affair (14 percent).

Only six percent of respondents attributed BN’s poor performance to Pakatan Harapan’s campaign while another two percent blamed it on votes split by PAS in multi-cornered tussles during the general election. - Mkini
