Home ministry in final stages of drafting IPCMC, says Muhyiddin

Muhyiddin Yassin says police feel it is not fair to single them out but feels it will enhance the image of the police in the long term.
PETALING JAYA: The home affairs ministry is in the final stages of drafting legislation for the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission for tabling in the Dewan Rakyat.
Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the ministry is hoping to table the bill as soon as possible.
He said the ministry had completed discussions with the respective stakeholders, such as the police, and their views would be taken into consideration.
“Police are not comfortable as they feel it is not fair to single them out.

“But such bodies have been formed in other countries. In the long term, it would enhance the image of the police,” he said after chairing PPBM’s meeting at its headquarters here today.
He assured the force that those who have not gone against the law would not have anything to worry about.
The PPBM president added that IPCMC would have specified laws in regards to the work of a police officer.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had on Sept 22 announced that the Cabinet had agreed to convert the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) to IPCMC.
The idea of setting up IPCMC was mooted during the era of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi when he was prime minister, from 2003 to 2009.
However, Abdullah shelved the proposal following opposition from the police and other parties.
