MCA’s Wee focuses on bread-and-butter issues on campaign trail

Tanjung Piai’s MCA candidate Wee Jeck Seng says he has received a lot of grouses from the people on their dissatisfaction over the government’s policies and rising cost of living.
PONTIAN: Tanjung Piai MCA candidate Wee Jeck Seng said he will campaign on bread-and-butter issues that concern the locals here in an attempt to win back the seat for Barisan Nasional.
He said despite losing the seat in the May 9, 2018 general election to the late MP, Dr Md Farik Md Rafik, he had still kept in touch with the locals in the constituency.
“We received a lot of grouses from the people on their dissatisfaction over the government’s policies and rising cost of living.
“We see it as a chance for us to speak for them in the Dewan Rakyat and do our job monitoring the government in fulfilling its GE14 election manifesto,” he said at a press conference after filing his nomination papers.
Wee said he is clear on his role as an elected representative, regardless of whether he is in the ruling coalition or opposition.
“My job is to speak for the people on what they are not happy with,” he added.
Wee, a former deputy minister, was Tanjung Piai MP from 2008 to 2018.
He is contesting for the parliamentary seat again, in a six-cornered fight with PH’s Karmaine Sardini, Gerakan’s Wendy Subramaniam, Berjasa’s Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz, as well as two independent candidates, Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar and Ang Uan Lock.
Meanwhile, Johor Barisan Nasional chairman Hasni Mohammad said his opposition coalition is more prepared to face this by-election as they have done their research on the ground.
“We will not take our campaign trail lightly and all of us in BN will try to reach out to every Tanjung Piai voter.
“Datuk Seri (Wee) is also an experienced leader and a local resident here.
“No one is more suitable to stand in Tanjung Piai than him,” he said.
Tanjung Piai voters will cast their votes on Nov 16. The Election Commission is expecting a 70% voter turnout on that day and has made preparations in case it floods. - FMT
