A group of cartoonists will be exhibiting their artworks online starting at midnight to depict the impact that Covid-19 has on freedom of speech in Malaysia.
According to cartoonist Zulkiflee SM Anwar Ulhaque, better known as Zunar, the online exhibition will involve 116 artworks by 29 local artists.
It will be hosted by a website called Craftora Gallery.
The website stated: "On Sept 16, at 12 midnight, Craftora Gallery will be hosting the 'Impact of Pandemic towards Freedom of Speech' online cartoon exhibition."
"This activity, including visuals such as promotional material, reports, artwork, and websites, is an effort by Persatuan Pendidikan Hujjah Ehsan with support from the Malaysia Reform Initiative, the United States Agency for International Development and the US Embassy," it added.
Zunar explained that the online exhibition is set for a week, ending Sept 23.
The cartoonist, who is known for his political activism artwork, said that the exhibition focuses on the importance of people's rights to express themselves.
"The artists will express, comment, show their protest and opinions on issues through their artworks.
"Did Covid-19 have any effect on the freedom of speech? All this would be answered in the works that will be exhibited," he said.
Zunar added that it would also be the first digital exhibition in the country, where a "virtual gallery building" was developed just for the programme.
Among the 29 featured artists include Orang Asli activist Shaq Koyok, artist Nikki Law, cartoonist Gandum and journalist Susan Loone.
Of particular note is an online forum at 3.30pm on Sept 18 featuring Zunar, singers Francissca Peter and Amylea Azizan as well as journalist Radzi Razak of Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm).
