Govt imposing targeted enhanced MCO on 4 districts in Sabah

COVID-19 | Putrajaya has announced an administratively-enforced targeted enhanced movement control order (MCO) to be imposed on four districts in Sabah beginning midnight.

The measure is due to the proliferation of Covid-19 cases in those areas.

The districts affected are Lahad Datu, Tawau, Kunak, and Semporna, said defence minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a statement.

The restriction would be imposed until Oct 12, involving 962,661 residents.

According to Ismail, the Health Ministry has reported 1,195 cases in those areas and has advised the government to implement the restrictions.

Lahad Datu has recorded 241 cases, Tawau (634), Semporna (255), and Kunak (65).

Throughout the targeted enhanced MCO period, residents are not allowed to leave, while non-residents and visitors are not allowed to enter the affected areas.

He said all business activities would be stopped, except for those selling essential items, and medical bases would be stationed in the four areas.

All the roads going in and out will be closed.

Ismail's announcement came after the Sabah snap polls concluded on Saturday where Gabungan Rakyat Sabah emerged as the winner after clinching 38 seats.

Sabah has become the epicentre of a new Covid-19 outbreak with the emergence of several clusters such as Bangau-Bangau, Laut, Benteng LD, Buang Sayang, Kampung Sakong, and Pulau.

Yesterday, the Health Ministry recorded 150 new cases nationwide with more than half occurring in Sabah.

In the peninsula, at least 15 new cases across Selangor, Pahang, Johor, Malacca, and Kuala Lumpur were traced to Sabah.
