Police have started an investigation on Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh over his recent remarks on the Christian Bible.
This came after several police reports were lodged against the PAS lawmaker for his comments on the matter.
Speaking to the media after an event in Kuala Lumpur today, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador (above) said witness statements had already been taken.
"We have opened an investigation paper because police reports were made in Sarawak. We have recorded witness statements.
"We are now waiting for a report from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission on the type of media that was used to make the issue 'viral'," he added.
Once completed, Hamid said the investigation papers will be submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC).
Zawawi previously said that all religions forbade the consumption of alcohol when debating the Road Transport Act amendments bill in the Dewan Rakyat.
The bill seeks to increase penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol.
When Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham corrected him and said it was intoxication that was wrong, Zawawi doubled down and said alcohol was not allowed in Christianity before the Bible was "distorted".
After church councils disputed his interpretation, Zawawi defended his comments and declined to apologise, insisting Christians had "no right to be offended".
He later issued a statement quoting Bible verses to again defend his comments.
More than 10 quizzed over Khairuddin
Asked about the probe into Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Khairuddin Aman Razali for breach of home quarantine rules, Hamid said the investigation has been completed.
He added that "more than 10" witnesses have been questioned in connection with the case, with the last one questioned yesterday (Sept 8).
"We have recorded a statement from the last witness. Maybe tomorrow we will submit the investigation paper to the AGC for it to scrutinise all proof and statements in the investigation file, and decide the next course of action," he said.
Six days after returning from Turkey on July 7, the PAS Kuala Nerus MP was seen in the Dewan Rakyat when he should have been under 14-day mandatory home quarantine.
Khairuddin was also seen in several other places during the period.
He has since been fined RM1,000.
While he has apologised, Khairuddin has brushed aside resignation calls and maintained he had merely broken standard operating procedures (SOPs) but did not err at his job. - Mkini
