Indie incumbent claims to have 'blessing' from PN leadership to contest in polls

Malaysiakini

SABAH POLLS | Independent candidate Kenny Chua, the Inanam incumbent, has claimed that he had received the "blessing" from Perikatan Nasional (PN) to represent them in the state polls, after Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) decided to contest in more seats than originally announced.
"Of course I was going to stand as an independent... without any party, but since there are clashes between PBS and Star, I got this blessing to represent PN in Inanam for now.
"What happened between PBS and Star, it seems like PBS broke their promise because they are not supposed to contest against Star where Star is standing," Chua (above) told reporters tonight.
He was attending a ceramah kelompok at the Sukang and Mabpai villages, which saw the attendance of about 40 people.
Almost half of those in attendance were wearing vests with the words "Perikatan Nasional" on the back. Chua himself was also wearing such a vest.
Both BN and PBS had reneged on Thursday's negotiated agreement on nomination day yesterday and fielded more candidates than originally announced, raising the number of seat clashes between them from 11 to 17.
PBS which promised to field 15 candidates ended up fielding 22 contenders including one at Tambunan where Star president and incumbent Jeffrey Kitingan is contesting.
Meanwhile, BN which promised to field 40 candidates ended up slipping in an extra one.
"I think last-minute what happened was certain people wanted to become candidates also, so they just go ahead and run.
"After that, of course, everybody got angry and then I think PN was not that happy with PBS because Star is PN. PBS is not PN.
"Not only did they (PBS) go against their promise, they even challenged the Star president in Tambunan as well as in Moyog and even in BN areas like Kapayan and Tanjung Aru," Chua said.
He said after that happened, he received the "blessing" from Kitingan (photo) and Bersatu to represent PN in the Sabah election.
However, he is still listed as an independent candidate on the ballot as he only supposedly received this blessing from PN after the nomination was finalised.
In July, Chua, who was the Sabah assistant finance minister at that time, had defected from PKR to support a coup against the Warisan-led state government.
The coup, initiated by former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman, was foiled after Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal secured a dissolution of the state assembly, paving the way for fresh polls.
Chua had said then that he had defected out of loyalty to PKR and its president Anwar Ibrahim, citing Warisan's backing for former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the reason why he could not be part of the Warisan-led state administration.  - Mkini
