PAS wants gambling banned, objects to Israeli ties

Malaysiakini

MUKTAMAR | The 66th PAS national delegates assembly resolved to ban the gambling industry and object to the normalisation of ties between some Middle Eastern countries and Israel.
These were among eight motions passed by the muktamar in Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan today. Only the above mentioned two motions were debated.
The motion to ban the gambling industry was tabled by PAS' women's wing. Its representative Asmak Husin (above) said the industry affected women and children the most.
"The negative effect of gambling doesn't just involve Muslims but non-Muslims as well, based on my experience as a member of the Dewan Negara.
"Illegal gambling is (also) rampant especially in Felda areas, villages and housing areas. It involves Muslims youths," she said.
The muktamar also resolved to object against the normalisation of diplomatic relations between the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Arab League and Bahrain with Israel.
The motion was tabled by the PAS ulama wing. Its representative Muhammad Najhan Shahir Abdul Halim said the three middle-eastern countries must not accept Israel because of its transgressions in Jerusalem.
"Baitul Maqdis (Jerusalem) is very important in Islamic history... (the land) is Holy to Muslims... Defending Baitul Maqdis from occupation is a continuing effort to strengthen our faith, as was done by the prophets before us," he said.
The UAE and Bahrain had agreed to normalise relations with Israel after being persuaded to do so by US President Donald Trump.
Following this, the Arab League, a 22-member regional organisation, rejected Palestine's request to condemn the UAE and Bahrain for doing so.
Tensions between Israel and the Muslim world were reignited in 2017 after Trump's government recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
The six motions passed by the muktamar without debate are:
  • Motion to take action against individuals who insult national symbols and the Rukun Negara.
  • Motion to defend the Perikatan Nasional government and Muafakat Nasional; Express gratitude to the government for controlling the Covid-19 outbreak.
  • Motion for government to allow withdrawals from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Account I to perform the haj.
  • Motion to introduce education on wakaf (endowment).
  • Motion for Islamic Studies to be a compulsory subject for Muslim students.
  • Motion for the enactment of guidelines for political donations that is in line with Islamic requirements and will not be detrimental to PAS' struggle.  - Mkini
