Newborn loses right hand after being bitten by family dog

MELAKA: A seven-day-old baby girl lost her right hand after being bitten by her family's pet dog here in Bachang.
The state Criminal Investigation Department head Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nor Yhazid Idris said the incident took place at 8.30am on Sept 8, when the baby was under her aunt's care.
Yhazid said the woman took the baby to the living room, which was located near the gate of the house, and exposed her to sunlight to treat jaundice.
"The baby had just been breastfed by her mother at the top floor of the house, accompanied by her husband.
"Before giving the baby her bath, the aunt placed the newborn on a pillow near to the closed gate to be exposed to sunlight.
"The aunt then left the baby for a while to prepare her bathwater," he said in a statement today.
Upon her return, the aunt was shocked to see the baby's right hand was being bitten by one of her husband's pet dogs.
"She saw the dog biting the baby's right hand and the newborn, who was covered in blood, was wailing," he said.
Yhazid said the aunt's loud scream shocked other family members.
The baby was rushed to a private hospital for treatment, before the hospital referred the newborn to the Melaka Hospital.
"The baby was placed in the emergency red zone before being rushed to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment by the specialists. She is currently undergoing surgery," he said.
Yhazid said the dog was believed to be of the 'Plott Hound' breed and was not tied. It was being kept to guard the house.
He said the Melaka Historic City Council had seized the dog for further action.
"The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 289 of the Penal Code." - NST
