PH-approved projects in Sandakan cancelled or frozen, says Guan Eng

Lim Guan Eng says the cancellation of the Sandakan projects goes against the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has claimed that a number of projects approved in Sandakan by the previous Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration have been cancelled or put on hold by the Perikatan Nasional-led government.

Lim said he was informed by Sandakan MP Vivian Wong that five projects valued at RM10.6 million were cancelled on July 8.

They were the upgrading of bridges in Kampung Sim-Sim, a new sewage system in Kampung Cina Sim-Sim, the upgrading of a community hall in Tanjong Papat, a road project at the St Monica junction and the repair of a home for the blind.

“The RM80 million upgrading project for the Sandakan International Airport that has commenced is now put on hold,” he said in a statement.

“Fortunately, the special funding for the Sandakan Hospital of RM10.6 million, Sandakan schools of RM280,000 and RM107,000 for churches, temples and mosques was already disbursed and could not be cancelled.”

Lim said the cancellation of the projects was a “clear act of political vengeance” as it went against the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the Cobbold Commission’s recommendation that Sabah be treated as an equal partner.

He hit out at Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for saying the federal government could only give assistance to Sabah as far as what was obligated under the Federal Constitution as Sabah and Putrajaya were not on the same page.

According to a Bernama report, Muhyiddin said more aid and allocations could be extended to Sabah if its leadership was aligned with the federal government.

Lim said the people of Sandakan and Sabah should vote for Warisan Plus to send a clear message to the federal government against playing politics over development projects. - FMT
