KUCHING: Several Sarawak NGO members have lodged a police report against PAS’ Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh for his comments on the Bible last week.
Movement of Change Sarawak (MoCS) members Mike Lim, Robert Ho and Edmund Lee filed the report against Zawawi at the police headquarters here this morning. They were accompanied by the movement’s legal adviser, See Chee How.
“We stand with the Association of Churches in Sarawak, the Christian Federation of Malaysia and all Christians to demand that Zawawi unreservedly apologise for his remarks,” Lee told reporters after lodging the report.
“We urge him to retract his statement made in Parliament on Aug 26. We also urge the police and relevant authorities to investigate and take appropriate action.”
During the recent Parliament debate on higher penalties for drink driving, Zawawi had said biblical injunctions about drinking alcohol had been “distorted or altered”, leading to widespread rebuke from Christian associations and politicians.
Then MoCS members pointed out that Sarawak, which consisted of more than 20 ethnic groups of various religions, had coexisted harmoniously besides having mutual respect for each other even before the formation of Malaysia.
Sarawak DAP also filed a complaint against Zawawi last Sunday.
In Sabah, political leaders had also urged the PAS MP to retract his remarks.
Zawawi has since said he would not apologise, and that Christians have “no right to be offended”. - FMT
