The Selangor state government has ordered the owner of the premises behind the recent water pollution to demolish the structure.
Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the private land where the heavy machinery maintenance factory is located did not have the planning permission from the Selayang City Council.
He said the Gombak land office will also issue a 7A notice after the premises was found to be the cause of the pollution which has affected 1.97 million water accounts throughout the Klang Valley and Selangor.
“We have instructed the owner to empty the land. That means they have to demolish the building. We will demolish it if they haven’t done it after a certain period.
“The city council will determine whether the operations are suitable or not. For now, we will close the premises for at least three to four months before it is truly safe.
“I think after two incidents, we will check as thoroughly as possible to ensure that the factory does not operate because they have caused trouble for 1.97 million accounts throughout Selangor,” he said at a press conference after chairing a meeting on the full report of the water pollution situation at the Air Selangor building today.
Amirudin also explained that they have ordered the city council to take the next appropriate steps.
He has also asked Air Selangor and Tenaga Nasional Berhad to cut the water and electricity supply to prevent the premises from operating again.
The pollutants that were discharged into Sungai Gong led to the closure of the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Rantau Panjang water treatment plants on Sept 3. This caused 1,292 areas in the Klang Valley to go without water.
Four men have since been arrested in connection with the pollution incident.
Meanwhile, the National Water Services Commission (Span) said in a separate statement that they will soon act against those responsible for the pollution that caused the water disruption in the Klang Valley.
They are considering charging the perpetrators under Section 121 of the Water Services Industry Act 2006 which carries a fine of RM500,000 or a maximum of three years jail term or whipping or all three, if convicted.
“Span is now completing the investigation papers including the process of taking statements from those involved and we predict that the investigation paper will be handed to a deputy public prosecutor in one week. - Mkini
