KOTA KINABALU: Almost three quarters of new Covid-19 cases reported today were from community infections, a state minister said, a day after warning about the possibility of a full lockdown if infections continued to rise.

The state government’s Covid-19 spokesman, Masidi Manjun, said 363 cases of community infections were reported today, accounting for 73.6% of the 493 cases recorded in the past 24 hours.

The rest involved 49 cases detected after individual symptomatic screenings, 19 cases from workplace screenings and 15 cases from private swab tests, among others.

Yesterday, the close contact screenings accounted for almost 60% of the 405 cases detected.

Masidi had also yesterday voiced concern that community infections are fast becoming a new threat in the state, attributing it to complacency in adhering to the health protocls, particularly over the year-end festive period.

The infections had steadily climbed from Jan 1, when 254 cases were reported.

After the latest infections today, Sabah has 39,453 cumulative cases, with 2,457 people still receiving treatment in hospitals and low-risk treatment centres.

Of the 27 districts in Sabah, 21 are categorised as red zones, two others orange zones and the remaining four yellow zones. - FMT
