Is govt afraid of us ‘small kids’, Syed Saddiq asks after RoS rejects Muda registration application

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman says political opponents have always dismissed him and his fellow youth leaders as being irrelevant and inconsequential.

PETALING JAYA: Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has asked the Perikatan Nasional-led government if it is afraid of facing “small kids” after his party’s registration application was rejected by the authorities.

Speaking to FMT, the Muar MP and Muda founder said their political opponents had always dismissed him and his fellow youth leaders as being irrelevant and inconsequential.

“They call us ‘small kids’. They said (before) we cannot bring change, but we proved them wrong by bringing politicians on both sides of the divide together to amend the Federal Constitution to empower youth through the Undi18 initiative.

“Then we founded Muda Malaysia, and again, we were dismissed.”

But Syed Saddiq, who became Malaysia’s youngest-ever minister when he was appointed to the previous Pakatan Harapan Cabinet, said the youth were not irrelevant.

“And the people who know this best are the very people who criticise us, the very people in power who, without any justifiable reason, continue to prevent us from registering our party.”

He said the government was clearly fearful of the youth, many of whom are jaded by the way the country is being run and have no loyalty to politicians of the past.

“Is the government so insecure about its own support that it does not dare to face a party of so-called ‘small kids’?

“Is it afraid we can do what it has failed to do, and unite all Malaysians irrespective of race and religion?”

Earlier, it was reported that the Registrar of Societies (RoS) had rejected Muda’s registration application.

Muda said the RoS rejected its application yesterday, but that no specific reason was given for the rejection.

This follows the RoS’ decision to also turn down the application by Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Pejuang to be registered as a political party. - FMT
