PKR Youth has launched a young professionals bureau to help increase the group's participation in the party.
In a ceremony at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today, a total of 26 young professionals were inducted into the party and bureau.
They consist of engineers, accountants, consultants, lecturers, lawyers and other similarly qualified individuals.
The ceremony was attended by PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasir and Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar.
In a speech, Akmal said the bureau would serve as an important platform for young professionals to be involved in politics and participate in important decisions at the national and party levels.
When asked by reporters about PKR's own politics, Akmal emphasised the importance of young professionals in his answer.
He was asked whether the Youth wing would object if any government MP involved in a corruption trial was to support Pakatan Harapan in forming the government.
This was in accordance with the statement of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim who said he was open to working with anyone including the government, as long as they respect the principle of rejecting corruption and cronyism.
"We have to hold on to principles," he said.
Nurul Izzah said the recent attack on the US Capitol was a grim reminder to Malaysia's youth that responsible citizens must participate in politics to protect democratic institutions.
"The only way we can survive is to remember to focus on our responsibility and keep a long-term view for the party," she added.
Akmal claimed that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government is not doing enough to help Malaysians struggling economically in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"For me when I see youth, they have a more long term view, and they realise that Covid-19 is a setback. We know the government of the day is not very focused on facing Covid-19.
"Their decisions keep changing, and now we worry that there may be an announcement of a movement control order next week.
"So my responsibility is to ensure that these young people can continue to thrive in the unfinished battle against Covid-19," he said.
Asked about the survival of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's administration following Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub withdrawing his support for the PN government, Akmal said that the government should focus on the real issue, namely the Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP).
"The government should focus on the issue of SOP and also the survival of the economy because the effect is very bad.
"If you talk with industry players, they are now shouting that the government needs to get focused on real issues," he claimed.
Ahmad Jazlan's announcement yesterday means that the PN government only has the support of 110 of the 220 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat.
For the record, the Dewan Rakyat has 222 seats, but two are vacant due to their incumbents' deaths - Liew Vui Keong (Batu Sapi) and Hasbullah Osman (Gerik).
Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah had also voiced opposition to Muhyiddin but has thus far abstained from voting against the government in Parliament.
However, with 110 MPs backing him, Muhyiddin still remains at the helm of the largest bloc in Parliament. - Mkini
