JOHOR BARU: Umno's call for the withdrawal of support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government has only served to demonstrate the former's insincerity and their thirst for power and positions.
In making this claim, former Johor menteri besar Datuk Osman Sapian said Umno's intentions were evident, in that they were only interested in forming the government to seek power.
"They also want to put their people in positions such as village heads and local councillors while at the top level, they would become ministers," said Osman, who is Kempas assemblyman.
These Umno leaders, he said, were also seeking to use government machineries to strengthen their party.
"If they were truly sincere, they would have been with us (from the beginning). Instead, they only joined us after they thought about what benefits they would get.
"So, when they do not get what they want, they become angry. This is not about helping the people," said Osman.
He was speaking to the media after presenting school aid to 300 students from the Kempas constituency.
Osman said most of those who were making "noise" were those who had lost in the last general election.
"To me, even if they are no longer members of parliament or assemblymen, they can still help the people in their own way because they are still division chiefs and they know a lot of people," said Osman.
He also said that now was not the appropriate time to hold a general election.
"The economy is in bad shape and the Covid-19 pandemic is still not under control as the number of cases are rising.
"The Covid-19 vaccine would only arrive in March. Then we will have the fasting month and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, so I do not think it is a good time to hold an election anytime soon," said Osman. - NST
