PETALING JAYA: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong commended Umno Youth for lending a hand to clean a Chinese temple in the aftermath of the Kota Tinggi floods in Johor.
He praised Umno Youth volunteers, Skuad Sabil, for assisting without taking into account the religious or racial background of those affected.
"Congratulations and kudos to Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Skuad Sabil for assisting in cleaning a non-Muslim worship house.
"This is the spirit of togetherness and unity in our country which we must practise.
"At a time when we are in trouble, there are those who lend a helping hand without a care for whatever the background is. This is because we are one big family who live in harmony and peacefully. This is our strength, our uniqueness which we must uphold at all times," said Dr Wee in a Facebook post on Sunday (Jan 10).
He posted pictures of the youths cleaning up the courtyard and surroundings of Lian Hua San Tai Zi Temple in Kampung Tembioh, which was recently hit with the floods.
Asyraf also posted on his Facebook page that they helped out on the basis of welfare, as Muslims are not forbidden to help non-Muslims.
"The openness of Islam draws the need for Muslims to help non-Muslims if they are in trouble, including cleaning up their houses of worship on the basis of respecting other religions.
"It is based on this principle that Umno Youth Skuad Sabil offered their help and service to not only clean Muslim houses of worship such as mosques and surau, but also Chinese temples which were badly damaged and dirtied by the floods which hit Kota Tinggi.
"May Allah regard all our efforts which we offer as welfare in God's name," said Asyraf.
