PETALING JAYA: Petronas says it is extending “necessary efforts” to ensure the well-being and safety of its contractor’s workers on an oil rig off the coast of Myanmar.
Its media engagement department said the company was in close contact with all 155 staff onboard and cooperating with the contractor to ensure a continuous supply of food, water and fuel.
“Petronas is working closely with its contractor, the Malaysian embassy in Myanmar, Wisma Putra and all relevant authorities in managing this matter.
“The safety and well-being of our contractors and their families are our utmost priority,” it said in a statement.
The statement added that another 36 workers under the contractor and two Petronas employees had been transported to nearby hotels for “onshore rest and recovery”, in accordance with Covid-19 quarantine requirements.
Earlier today, it was reported that around 200 workers on a Petronas oil rig were left stranded in the Andaman Sea after the Myanmar coup on Monday.
The workers had reportedly lost contact with ground control and the Malaysian embassy since Monday, adding that they were still waiting for a helicopter to pick them up. - FMT
