PKR president Anwar Ibrahim panned Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin for stating that the opposition leader would be probed for allegedly inciting the people and threatening the security and peace of the country.
Anwar questioned how making an appeal to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong constitute a threat or incitement.
"Did the minister even read our letter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong? What did we say? We appealed and requested for the ruler's kindness and wisdom.
"Does he (the minister) not understand Bahasa? We appealed for the ruler's kindness and wisdom to consider - does that sound like a demand?
"Can't the common people, such as cleaners, frontliners and ordinary workers, appeal to the Agong for him to influence and improve the situation on matters that we do not agree?" Anwar said in a video aired on his Facebook page.
Anwar questioned if the emergency government expected the people to support all of its actions.
'I hope the leadership won't resort to threats'
He maintained that a majority of MPs - between 114 to 115 - want a review of the emergency and the suspension of Parliament.
He also questioned if filing petitions in court were illegal.
Several petitions have been filed in court challenging Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's advice to the Agong to declare a state of emergency.
"I hope the leadership won't resort to threats. You have lost your majority, so face the democratic reality instead of resorting to threats," the Port Dickson MP said.
Anwar added that he was prepared to cooperate with the police if there were genuine legal issues.
But he stressed that the police should not be investigating him simply due to the home minister's instructions.
On a separate matter, Anwar also criticised Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz for insisting that investor confidence was intact.
He cited the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development report, which showed that Malaysia's foreign direct investment slid 68 percent in 2020, far worse than its regional peers.
Anwar said Tengku Zafrul's insistence was not grounded in reality.
"Is Covid-19 to be blamed for everything? All Asean countries and all countries in the world are facing the same problem.
"Why is Malaysia doing worse? Because governance is weak. The ministers are busy with their awards. There are also issues of contracts without open tenders," he said.
The government, Anwar added, should take responsibility for the decline of Bursa Malaysia and investor confidence. - Mkini
