Continue donating blood, hospital urges the public

The Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) has urged the public to continue to donate blood due to a shortage of supply of late, said its transfusion unit physician, Dr Wan Noor Falah Wan Yahaya.

“HTF’s total collection of blood supply dropped to 8,725 bags from January to October last year compared with 9,108 bags in 2019,” she told reporters today.

She said that as of January this year, the hospital has only collected 649 blood bags while they need 700 to 800 bags a month.

“Each week, the HTF requires 150 to 200 blood bags to ensure constant sufficient supply,” she said.

Wan Noor Falah said the number of new donors was 26.2 percent last year, which goes to show that public awareness of the practice of donating blood was still at a moderate level.

Meanwhile, donor Mohd Jafni Sahidan, 36, said he came forward to donate blood after finding out about the shortage of blood supply at the HTF through Facebook yesterday.

The HTF’s blood bank is open daily and members of the public can call 04-9738197 to make an appointment.
