SIBU: There was a mad rush by residents of Song district to buy daily necessities before the movement control order comes into effect on Tuesday (Feb 2).
Song OCPD Deputy Supt Rowney Michael Jalak said police had set up roadblocks at Jalan Temalat and Jalan Takan.
He said about 90% of the motorists they spoke on Jalan Takan said they were rushing to town to stock up daily necessities.
A number of Covid-19 positive cases were reported from longhouses on Jalan Takan over the last few days.
"We found that there was a greater number of vehicles going to town today (Feb 1) than yesterday.
"This is obviously due to people buying daily necessities prior to the MCO," he said.
Earlier, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi advised the people in Kapit and Song, both set to be under the MCO from Feb 2 to 15, to avoid panic buying ahead of the MCO.
On Jalan Temalat, which is the road linking Song to Kapit, about 90% of the vehicles had police permit for travel where the reasons given by motorists included going home, tending to family matters and work," he said.
The other 10% of the vehicles were essential service vehicles sending goods from Sibu to Kapit.
One motorist from Sibu Jaya was asked to turn back as he did not have valid reason to travel to Kapit. - Star
