Ex-AG's book: Publisher threatens legal action on those circulating pirated PDF

The publisher of former attorney-general Tommy Thomas' autobiography titled My Story: Justice in the Wilderness has threatened to take legal action against those circulating a pirated soft copy version of the book online.

Local publisher Gerakbudaya stressed that the book is only available in physical form and the PDF version infringes intellectual property rights.

"We seek the immediate cessation of the circulation of a pirated PDF copy of My Story: Justice in the Wilderness by Tommy Thomas, published by our SIRD imprint.

"We request that the infringer take down the infringing material immediately. The book is available only in physical form and the digital versions remain private and confidential.

"We are providing this notice in good faith and that the circulation of the pirated version constitutes an intellectual property violation and we intend to take legal action regarding this matter if it fails to be resolved," it said in a statement today.

Thomas' autobiography was officially available for sale on Jan 30 but it sold out two days later.

In a notice on Facebook, Gerakbudaya said they are currently producing a subsequent reprint.

Those who pre-ordered the book by Jan 29 will likely receive their copy by the first week of February, it assured.

It added that those who pre-ordered after that date will have their orders fulfilled as soon as possible, likely before the end of the month.

Gerakbudaya founder Chong Ton Sin

Gerakbudaya founder Chong Ton Sin told Malaysiakini that they received over 1,000 pre-orders for the book.

The first print saw all 2,000 copies sold within two days and Gerakbudaya is printing another 5,000.

The reprint is expected to be available on Feb 5, Chong said.

"Not all 2,000 books were sold by us in our bookstore, part of them were pre-ordered online.

"We also sent part of it to some retailers like Kinokuniya," he explained. - Mkini
