NIBONG TEBAL: The Penang Health Department has issued compound notices against four fucuk (thin dried tofu sheets) processing factories at Sungai Bakap, Sungai Jawi here for operating in an unhygienic condition.
Its Food Safety and Quality Division environmental health officer, Mohd Wazir Khalid said the compound notices, worth RM8,500 were issued to the premises which were operating next to a former pig farm site, for violating Regulation 10 and Regulation 32 of the Food Act 1983.
He said during the raid, workers were found not wearing gloves when processing food, flies were seen hovering over food, the environment was filthy, dogs were allowed to roam in the food processing area as well as rat droppings and cat carcasses were found in one of the factories.
“All these factories operate without a licence. Some have been in operation for 40 years and the newest started eight years ago.
“This place used to be a pig farm and this situation is very upsetting because the environment is very dirty and we do not know whether the place has been cleaned or sanitised well.
“Dogs that are allowed to roam have skin diseases, believed to be mange that can cause food contamination and possible infectious diseases. We hope the authorities can take immediate action,” he told reporters during Op Runcit at Jalan Valdor, Sungai Jawi here today.
He said the premises use wood to hang fucuk and this can cause food poisoning from fungal reproduction due to moisture accumulated in the wood. - FMT
