PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasir has slammed the action of the authorities in conducting an investigation against party president Anwar Ibrahim for sending a letter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong requesting the emergency proclamation be reversed.
In a statement today, the Johor Baru MP said the investigation was proof that the Perikatan Nasional government was desperate.
Akmal said Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin's statement on the matter was threatening and it appeared to be politically motivated.
"This is a desperate move by the home minister and the PN government by using undemocratic modus operandi, manipulating the law and exploiting civil servants for political gain alone.
"The home minister is seen as hasty by issuing political statements that are far from the true essence of the letter sent to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
"This is an act of intimidation that is completely unfounded and ignores the right of MPs to submit letters to represent and convey the people's wishes to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," he said in a post on his Facebook, today.
On Feb 2, Hamzah said the police had opened an investigation paper against Anwar following 13 police reports made nationwide against the opposition leader for allegedly inciting and threatening the country's security and order.
The home minister said it included several other individuals who reportedly opposed the Declaration of Emergency and urged the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah to cancel it.
"Not only Anwar alone, but we are also investigating several others," he said in a press conference at his ministry in Putrajaya.
Several petitions have been filed in court challenging Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's advice to the Agong to declare a state of emergency.
Anwar, in reply to Hamzah, had said that he hoped the leadership wouldn't resort to threats.
"You have lost your majority, so face the democratic reality instead of resorting to threats," the Port Dickson MP said.
Anwar added that he was prepared to cooperate with the police if there were genuine legal issues, but he stressed that the police should not be investigating him simply due to the home minister's instructions.
Earlier, Anwar had suggested that all MPs send a letter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to seek His Majesty's consent to cancel the emergency proclamation and order a parliamentary session to be held as soon as possible.
Umno also through a letter issued by its secretary-general Ahmad Maslan asked its MPs to send a letter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong requesting that a parliamentary session be held.
However, it did not get support from Umno MPs.
Meanwhile, Akmal said Anwar's action has a constitutional basis based on Article 150 (3) regarding the declaration of emergency.
"The actions of Anwar and the members of Parliament certainly have a strong constitutional basis by referring to Article 150 (3) regarding the declaration of emergency that can be withdrawn by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or revoked by Parliament.
"In this case, the government's mistake in suspending Parliament has made only the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as a channel that can end the emergency," he added.
Akmal urged the PN government to immediately stop its culture of intimidation and realise that many of their actions that have harmed the people. - Mkini
